The Mediflow Gel Memory Foam Pillow

The first thing you will notice about Mediflows memory foam version of their popular water pillow is the it’s flat rectangular shape. Unlike their other pillows, mediflow has opted for a squared design.

Yep, it’s a pretty square pillow.
While the packaging claims the pillow measures 18” x 25” We found the measurements to be closer to 16” x 24”.
The pillow itself is surrounded by a cotton cover. Mediflow have screen printed their brand name in a repeating pattern across the surface.
Fortunately, when I ran my hand across the surface of the pillow, the feel of the print was indistinguishable from the rest of the cotton cover.
On the right hand side of the pillow cover you will find a zipper (for ease of cleaning). And unzipping it allows us to take a closer look at the inside of the pillow.

It is here that you can see that the core of the pillow is actually made up of two different types of foam.
- Top Layer – Gel infused memory foam
- Bottom Layer – Polyurethane foam
Each layer serves it’s own unique purpose.
1. Gel Infused Memory Foam Layer

The top layer of the foam core is constructed from soft gel infused memory foam. If you look closely, you can see small pieces of chopped up gel pellets throughout the pillow.
While these small pellets may feel hard, they cannot be felt when your head rests against the pillow.
The soft top layer provides a comfortable layer to rest your head. While the gel infused memory foam may not sleep cooler than traditional memory foam, the pin hole design that runs through the entire pillow allows air to circulate throughout the pillow, drawing away heat.
2. Polyurathane foam layer

Now if Mediflow had made the entire pillow out of the softer top layer of memory foam, your head would sink right through it. To combat this, Mediflow have used a second layer of polyurethane foam.
The firmer polyurethane foam provides a much needed supportive layer to the pillow and pushes back when you rest your head on the pillow.
Like all memory foam, the Mediflows waterbase pillow gives off a strong odor. We recommended leaving the foam core of the pillow to air for 48 hours prior to using it
While the smell did get weaker and weaker with continued use, it was still noticeable to those with a sensitive nose.
The Waterbase

If you lift up the foam core, and look at the base of the pillow, you will see the silver polyester water pouch sewn right into the cover. Hence the name, waterbase.
Now as you may have noticed, this pillow can only be slept on in one orientation, with the gel memory foam layer at the top.
You will always be able to identify the bottom of the pillow by the plastic cap that is sewn into the cover.

As you likely have guessed, this is how you fill up your pillow.
To help make things less messy, I really appreciated the fact that Mediflow includes a funnel in the packaging. Not only can the funnel be used to help remove the plastic cap, but also allows you to easily pour water into the pillow without making a mess.
The funnel even screws right into the valve. A fantastic feature that means you can use your free hand to grip the pillow, rather than trying to keep the funnel straight while you pour the water inside.

Achieving the desired firmness was as easy as measuring out the water like so…
- Soft: 60 – 80 oz
- Medium: 80-100 oz
- Firm: – 100 -130 oz
Not supportive enough? Fill it with more water.
Too firm? Take some water out.
That is the beauty of a water pillow. The support of the pillow entirely up you.
Now it is worth mentioning that the water can add quite a bit of weight to the pillow. If you are elderly or struggle with lifting heavy objects, you will probably want to fill this pillow up on your bed, so that you don’t have to lift it again when you are done.
Fortunately, the funnel makes it easy to do this without any spills.
Now I do want to point out that after you have filled the pillow, it is vital that you remove any air pockets from the water pouch.
If you don’t you will hear the water sloshing around inside the pillow each time you shift your head in your sleep.
Overall the Mediflow Memory Foam Waterbase pillow is a good choice for those of you looking for a foam filled water pillow. There is a reason why it took out our best water pillow for side and stomach sleepers award.
