Less stress, better sleep, radiant skin, a slimmer waistline, a healthy relationship, and loads of self-confidence? Um, yes please!!
Let’s be honest, most of us are constantly striving for at least one, if not all, of the life goals on that list. When I found out that by simply sleeping naked all of those goals could be well within my reach, I couldn’t pack up my pajama drawer fast enough.
Sleeping naked may be one of the most underrated sleep habits, with only about 12% of Americans stripping down before turning in at night.1
When you consider the long list of health benefits that sleeping in the buff boasts, it’s mind-boggling that more of us aren’t immediately peeling off our pajamas!
I know it may seem hard to believe that taking off your clothes can help to improve so many areas of your life, but don’t jump back into your flannels just yet. Let’s first explore the reasoning behind why sleeping naked can be so beneficial.
Sleep Naked to Save Money & Time
Money and time are things that we all want more of. And while sleeping naked may not make you a millionaire, you will definitely save a few bucks by no longer having to purchase sleep apparel.
The sleepwear industry is booming and appeals consumers by making them believe that the various sleeping occasions in your life require the perfect attire.
There’s specialty sleepwear for various holidays, sexy sleepwear for romantic nights, and cozy sleepwear for movie marathons. The reality is, you already own the best possible sleeping outfit – your bare birthday suit!
By sleeping naked, the money that you spend on sleepwear can be better spent on fabulous clothes that will actually see the light of day. And the time that you spend considering what to sleep in each night can be used to catch a few extra minutes of shut-eye or watch that last episode of your favorite show on Netflix.
Bottom line-we are faced with hundreds of decisions each day that take up precious time and money. By sleeping naked, you just eliminated one of them!
Sleep Naked, Sleep Better
It’s no secret that a full night of quality sleep is essential for overall health and wellness. Unfortunately, it seems that there is an epidemic of sleep-related problems for many Americans. According to the National Sleep Foundation:
forty-five percent of Americans say that poor or insufficient sleep affected their daily activities at least once in the past seven days2
Sleeping naked is one of the simplest things that you can do to improve your overall sleep quality. No matter how cute your favorite pair of pajamas are, wearing excess clothing to bed can cause distractions, discomfort, and ultimately interrupt your sleeping. There is nothing worse than pajamas that ride up in your sleep!
Interrupted sleep poses a major health concern in that it prevents your brain from entering a deep and continuous state of unconsciousness. Your brain and body are only able to heal and rejuvenate with deep, uninterrupted, REM sleep. Failure to do so will leave you feeling sluggish and grumpy the next day.
Furthermore, as you fall asleep, your core body temperature naturally drops, allowing you to enter that REM sleep phase. Researchers at the University of Amsterdam found that lowering your skin temperature increases the depth of your sleep and reduces the number of times that you wake in the night.3
Aside from being woken up by your tangled sleepwear, bulky or baggy ‘jamas fight against your body’s natural desire to cool down and make it more difficult to achieve a deep sleep. And wearing a bra to sleep can feel restrictive.
By sleeping naked, you allow your body to do exactly what it was designed to do without the pesky interference of your favorite footy pajamas. Do your body, and your sleep quality, a favor by keeping your sleeping attire au naturel.
Sleeping Naked Can Relax You!
Oxytocin is a chemical that when released into the brain has been proven to reduce stress and anxiety levels, lower blood pressure, promote trust, optimism, and even self-esteem.
Often called the love molecule or the cuddle hormone, oxytocin is released upon bodily contact, preferably skin to skin. And Sleeping naked will lead to skin to skin contact, assuming that you sleep with another person.
Even if cuddling isn’t your thing, by sleeping nude you expose more of your body(really, all of it), upping the chances that you will make skin to skin contact with your partner throughout the night. You might not be cuddle while you are awake, but your sleeping self might have other ideas
As if reducing stress, lowering blood pressure, and promoting self-esteem weren’t enough, oxytocin has also been shown to seriously boost the immune system, help beat depression, and improve intimacy levels between couples.
Basically, oxytocin plays a crucial role in not only keeping us healthy, but keeping us happy as well.
Dr. Fran Walfish, psychotherapist and author, told Medical Daily:
When you and your partner both sleep naked, the skin-to-skin contact will release the feel-good hormone, oxytocin. Even further, you may have more sex and we all know orgasms are Mother Nature’s best answer to insomnia…better than bottled milk and Ambien!4
Based on that logic alone, if sleeping naked produces more of the miraculous oxytocin in my brain, count me in.
A Happier Relationship
It’s no secret that a healthy sex life is an important factor in any solid relationship. But if the physical fire between you and your sweetheart has been fizzling lately, sleeping naked is the perfect way to rekindle that flame.
Dr. Jennifer Landa, author of The Sex Drive Solution for Women, says:
“Sleeping naked encourages sex and sexier relationships are healthier relationships.”
Although undressing each other can be a fun prelude to physical intimacy, sleeping naked kind of takes the middleman out and makes you feel just plain sexy.
And when you feel sexy, generally you have an increased sex drive. It’s just basic logic, really: more nudity leads to more sex leads to a better relationship.
But sleeping in the buff doesn’t just work to boost your sex life, it also strengthens the emotional connection between you and your partner.
Think about it, when you are completely naked, you are in a pretty vulnerable state. Feelings of vulnerability allow you to build trust and feel closer and more connected with your significant other.
Cotton USA conducted a recent study exploring the benefits of sleeping naked and found that it inspires physical and emotional intimacy between couples which inevitably leads to happier relationships. 5
All of this has me wishing that I had tried sleeping naked more frequently with my estranged husband. Perhaps the simple act of taking our clothes off could have helped us keep our wedding rings on.
Let Your Body Parts Breathe
Keeping your lady parts snugly covered up all day can be quite hazardous to your vaginal health. Bacteria flourish in warm, moist environments and since your vaginal area tends to have a jungle-like climate it can act as a breeding ground for harmful yeast and bacteria.
Now I realize that you can’t walk around all day with your lower region fully exposed to ward off bacteria, but you can sleep naked.
Jennifer Landa, MD also claimed another benefit of sleeping naked. And this one is for us women only! She claims that one of the healthiest things that you can do for your downstairs lady parts is to sleep naked.
So, strip off your underwear and pajama bottoms and give your vagina a healthy dose of ventilation, helping it to stay dry and discouraging possible yeast or bacterial infections.
Obviously the exception here is when that time of the month strikes. Then you will be expected to pull out your ugly period panties. But you will still be able to spend the majority of each month sleeping in the buff.
Sleeping unclothed is also beneficial for the male reproductive organs, which tend to spend the majority of the day tucked into an excessively warm environment.
Research has shown that when male testicles are exposed to increased temperatures for a prolonged period of time it can cause damage to the sperm and lower fertility.6
Sleeping naked gives your male parts a chance to cool down and improve the quality of your sperm. Worth a shot if you are trying for kids!
Look more beautiful!
The term ‘beauty sleep’ has never been more true when you throw the word naked into the equation. Sleeping naked can have a significant positive impact on your overall physical appearance by promoting more radiant skin, helping with weight loss, and preventing premature aging.
The human growth hormone and melatonin are responsible for assisting with many bodily functions, with anti-aging being one of the most important. The problem is, if your body temperature isn’t able to naturally cool off as you sleep, it can interfere with the release of these two beauty boosting hormones.
Natasha Turner, author of The Hormone Diet, says:
As your body temperature drops, growth hormone is released and works its regenerative magic.
The magic that she is referring to is the hormone’s ability to keep your hair shiny and your skin luminous.
The human growth hormone also assists with keeping a healthy body composition and promoting muscle growth. As we know by now, sleeping naked is one of the most efficient ways to keep your body temperature regulated so that these miraculous hormones can work their magic.
Another beauty benefit that results from keeping your body temperature low during sleep is a thinner waistline and increased metabolism.
The U.S. National Institutes of Health conducted a study that proved keeping cool while you sleep speeds the body’s metabolism.7 This occurs because the body naturally produces calorie-busting brown fat when it enters deep states of REM sleep that are reached by lowering body temperatures. The production of brown fat at night helps keep your metabolism going strong all day long.
Aside from boosting your metabolism, sleeping naked can help lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol. Increased levels of cortisol lower the body’s immune system, raise cholesterol and blood pressure levels, and increase your appetite and cravings for sugar and carbs.
As your body cools down and enters into a healthy sleep pattern, the levels of cortisol in your body will naturally reduce. If things like unnecessary extra clothing interrupt your sleep pattern, cortisol levels remain high and trigger food cravings and overeating the next day.
I’m not saying that sleeping naked is the same as going to the gym every day or getting a facelift, but it is a super simple way to give your overall beauty routine a serious boost.
Are There Any Disadvantages to Sleeping Naked?
Now that we have covered the many ways that tossing your regular sleep attire for your birthday suit can be beneficial for your health and wellness, let’s look at any potential drawbacks of sleeping nude.
In all honesty, there are very few disadvantages to sleeping nude.
The biggest issue with sleeping nude is that it just makes some people uncomfortable. If you try and force yourself to adopt a sleeping habit that causes you anxiety of any kind, it will undoubtedly infringe on the quality of your sleep and your overall health.
Those people who adhere to a slightly more modest take on nudity may never reach the level of comfort that is needed in order to really reap the benefits of sleeping naked.
If this sounds like you, you might try starting off slowly by sleeping in less clothing than usual for starters. Try going to sleep with only underwear or shorts on for a few days. This will allow you to gradually work up to complete nudity.
Another tip to make the transition from full on pajamas to full on nakedness more comfortable is to keep a robe within arms reach of your bed. This way, once you wake in the morning or if you need a bathroom break in the middle of the night, you don’t have to walk across the room baring it all.
The other disadvantages to sleeping nude involve the idea that it can increase your chances of catching a cold or developing skin allergies from overexposed skin. In reality, there is very little science or research to back up either of these claims.
Whether you sleep nude or in flannel pajamas, you should always ensure that your bedroom is free from drafts or bursts of cold air in an effort to prevent illness.
And if skin allergies are a concern due to overexposed skin, you can equip your bed with allergy-proof (hypoallergenic) sheets to help ward off allergens and dust mites. In reality, sleeping naked tends to keep your bed cleaner thanks to less night sweating.
Plus, without bulky sleep clothes bunching and rubbing over your body as you shift and move throughout the night, you will likely see an improvement in the overall health of your skin.
Considering the ample list of ways that sleeping naked can benefit your health, relationship, and overall wellness, these disadvantages are fairly insignificant.
The only question left to ask is, who are you going to donate all of your pajamas and sleep attire to?
Do you sleep naked? Has sleeping naked improved your sleep? I would love to hear your story. Let me know in the comments below!
